Developer LightningModz has announced that etaHEN , the Homebrew Enabler for
PlayStation 5 consoles , has officially become open source and is now distributed under the GPLv3 license.

EtaHEN is a payload that runs on jailbroken PS5s and behaves like a full-fledged custom firmware, allowing the execution of homebrew applications, decrypted game backups in fpkg format, and offering advanced features such as runtime tweaks, performance patches, and a debug menu with additional settings.

The choice of the GPLv3 license makes the source code free, accessible and modifiable by anyone, while ensuring that any derived version remains open source.

In practice, anyone who uses or modifies etaHEN will have to maintain the GPLv3 license, make the source code available, properly attribute the work to the original authors, and ensure that the changes are not incorporated into proprietary projects.

The code is already available on GitHub, where it had previously only been used to release builds. Anyone can study it, improve it, or integrate it into other projects, but must comply with the terms of the license.

LightningModz has however decided not to include the CMakeLists files required for compilation, a strategic choice to discourage abuse or attempts at misappropriation with minimal modifications passed off as independent projects.

This is not a violation of GPLv3, which only requires the publication of the source code, not the build tools.

With this decision, etaHEN not only opens itself to community collaboration, but also protects itself from potential misuse, remaining faithful to the principles of transparency, sharing, and freedom that underpin open source.
